Veteran Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Alex Villanueva has announced his candidacy to oust Sheriff Jim McDonnell. McDonnell, now three years into the job, is presiding over a free-fall in deputy morale, rising crime and a continue drumbeat of negative press.
Morale in particular is terrible because deputies believe–and are often told by their supervisors–that getting in trouble is simply the cost of doing business (their jobs) under Sheriff McDonnell.
“In trying to get rid of wrongdoers, McDonnell has been disciplining only low-level deputies, Villanueva claimed. “It’s management by ‘gotcha.”
No wonder deputies are doing as little as possible and crime is going through the roof!
