An community activist group announced today that, frustrated by Sheriff McDonnell’s lack of transparency to the community, it was kicking off a campaign to give the citizen oversight commission that oversees the Sheriff’s Department subpoena power.
The initiative, Reform LA Jails, began gathering signatures on Saturday. If it can tally up 150,000 of them by June, the proposal would be placed on the November ballot.
Sheriff McDonnell opposes giving the commission subpoena power, seeing it as an advisory group rather than an oversight one.
“The voters of Los Angeles County have entrusted me to oversee their Sheriff’s Department,” NPR reporter Frank Stoltze quotes McDonnell as saying. Giving the commission subpoena power “would diminish the purpose of the COC [Civilian Oversight Commission] as a bridge to the community.”
